For cash-strapped nations like India too, a force structure consisting of a core fleet of high-technology combat jets plus a significant number of more affordable ones makes sense. Fifth-generation fighters would certainly boost the IAF’s operational capability to undertake high-risk missions and attacks against heavily defended, high-value targets. However, in more benign environments despite its many shortcomings, the HAL Tejas Mark 1A may fit the bill as a cheap, lightweight and capable jet, suitable for a variety of IAF combat missions.
