INDIAN COAST GUARD EFFORTS TOWARDS CYCLONE 'VAYU' IN ARABIAN SEA

https://www.dsalert.org/images/2019/June-2019/cost.jpgWith the first sign of weather disturbance in the form of low pressure in South East Arabian Sea on 08 Jun 19, Indian Coast Guard initiated pre-emptive measures to prevent any loss of lives at sea. Indian Coast Guard assets were placed on high alert and readiness since 09 Jun 19. The Cyclonic Storm ‘Vayu’ over East Central Arabian Sea has moved Northwards with a speed of about 15 kms in last six hours and lay centered about 350 kms West South West of Goa, 510 kms South South West of Mumbai & 650 kms South of Viraval. It is very likely to intensity in to a severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and will move Northwards to cross Gujarat Coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around veraval & Diu Region as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 110-120 kms/hours gusting to 135 kms/hr on 13 th June.
Indian Coast Guard ships and Dornier aircraft are being deployed off Western coast daily since 09 Jun 19 to broadcast warnings on VHF and advise fishermen at sea to return harbour. A State level meeting was held at State Emergency Operation Centre, Gandhinagar on 10 Jun 19 and representative from Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NDRF, GMB, ISRO, IMD, GSDMA, SDRF and other relief agencies attended the meeting. Weather warnings continue to be circulated to fisheries authorities, fishermen association and local authorities for disseminating to fishermen. Fisheries authorities have been requested to implement fishing ban strictly and recall fishermen at sea, if any. Coast Guard ships and Aircraft continue to shepherd boats at sea to safety.
Tourism Department has been requested to initiate measure for discouraging local public to venture at beach/ sea and keep watch group on prominent beaches. Indian Coast Guard Remote Operating Stations (ROS) are transmitting weather warnings in local languages on VHF at regular intervals for fishermen and mariners all along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coast. Special Community Interaction Programmes are being conducted, laying special emphasis on weather warning and necessary precautions to be taken during such warning. Identification/ Mobilisation of Disaster Response and Relief Materials in co-ordination with various authorities/agencies is in progress.
