Maritime Bulwark

| | | Share |

Since time immemorial whenever man sought to find out what lay on the other side of the ocean cataclysmic events occurred. The New World was discovered; the United States of America created; the Bull (Edict) of Pope Alexander the Sixth divided South America between Spain and Portugal. Those eager to find India via the west route bumped into the Caribbean islands and they named them West Indies on realising their mistake. The Brits came eastwards and found the real India (where it had always been) and colonised it. No matter which direction one travelled it seemed that even then India was central to their endeavour. France and Portugal have left spoors of history on its shores.

Diwali Spirit

It was heart-warming to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi among soldiers guarding the very difficult Himalayan frontiers on Diwali day. He put on record the sentiments of a nation of 125 crore Indians of appreciation and total support for the men (and an increasing number of women) who lay their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation that has been a target of external aggression from the very moment of its creation in 1947. Porous Borders and the Extreme Security Climate of India

| | | Share |

Borders are a hallmark of a nation-State. The concept of borders grew out of a human urge in primitive man (and even animal instincts) for secure territorial control. It was out of this innate urge that civilisations within territorial limits and clear jurisdiction were born and flourished.

Terrorism or Political conflict?

| | | Share |

Battlelines have become blurred. Rare are the occasions when the Armed Forces of one nation confronted the Armed Forces of another in clearly defined geographical limits. Hybrid warfare has become the norm and war by proxy, the new methodology in regime change operations. The combatants are now either ‘our freedom fighters’ or as the victims claim, they are terrorists who use improvised explosive devices for suicide bombing, car bombing and act either in concert or as ‘lone wolf’ to strike.
