To conquer the oceans: We need harmony within the shores

Indian mythology depicts that the forces of Good and Evil once decided to find out who could plumb the depths of oceans and retrieve its unique resources. The Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean) embodies the current yearning among nations to grab control of oceans for their exclusive benefit either through “spheres of influence” or direct control of sea lines of communication. India has been a victim of this rivalry of nations, adamant on colonising and exploitation.

Our history gives us an insight into our past. For posterity, it records great deeds of our forebears along with their shortcomings. Like the First War of Independence of 1857, British history in India is well-documented. There will always be a difference of opinion on whether the first war of Independence was a “mutiny”, as some British called it, or a greater effulgence of nationalistic fervour.

Anniversaries are moments of introspection. Our vision and mission to inculcate a sense of ‘defence’ and ‘security’ as a second nature to our personalities and collective existence gets reinforced as we reconnoitre our interesting journey of four years through the mirror of our readers’ invaluable feedback. In retrospect, I would like to quote the enlightened one, Gautam Buddha, “Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
