Denmark Acquires Norwegian Naval Strike Missiles – Strengthening the Navy and Nordic Defence Cooperation

Denmark has officially signed an agreement with Norway to procure Naval Strike Missiles (NSM), a modern and advanced anti-ship missile system. The new missiles will replace the ageing Harpoon missiles, some of which have been donated to Ukraine. The deal, valued at between 900 million and 1.5 billion DKK, marks a significant boost for both the Danish Navy’s operational capabilities and Nordic defence cooperation.

A Strengthened Nordic Defence Partnership

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted the agreement as a key step in enhancing existing cooperation between Denmark and Norway:

"It is absolutely crucial for our shared security in an uncertain world that we continue to build upon and expand our Nordic cooperation in the coming years."

Norwegian Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik also emphasised the benefits of closer defence ties:

"Advanced Norwegian missiles on Danish frigates will strengthen Nordic naval defence and contribute to greater security in our shared region – including in the North."

Fast and Efficient Procurement

In December 2024, the Danish government decided to acquire new naval missiles due to the evolving security situation. The agreement was swiftly negotiated and was officially signed today by Per Pugholm Olsen, Director of the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation and Gro Jære, Director of the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency.

"I am very pleased that we have secured this agreement in such a short time. The government is focused on speeding up acquisitions, and this deal with Norway proves that it is possible," said Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

Facts about NSM Missiles:

Sea-skimming capability: Can fly at extremely low altitudes to evade detection.

Advanced evasive manoeuvres: Designed to avoid enemy radar and defence systems.

Precision targeting: Equipped with cutting-edge technology and a 500-pound warhead.

With this acquisition, Denmark takes another important step towards modernising its defence capabilities while reinforcing its commitment to Nordic military cooperation.
