EAM S. Jaishankar addressed the 8th Indian Ocean Conference and met with several counterparts

The 8th Indian Ocean Conference is being organised by India Foundation in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman on February 16-17, 2025 in Muscat, Oman. The theme for this year of the ‘Conference is Voyages to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership.’

Mr. Jaishankar addressed the inaugural session of the conference. He said that the Indian Ocean is veritably a global lifeline, and urged the countries in the region to supplement their strengths, coordinate their policies to fulfil its development, connectivity, maritime and security aspirations.

EAM highlighted how India is contributing to these shared endeavours:

  • As a stable partner and friend in times of COVID, food & fuel shortages or even economic crisis.
  • As a promoter of greater land and sea connectivity -  be it IMEC, IMTT or INSTC.
  • In becoming a first responder to conflicts and disasters in the region, both natural and man made.
  • Ensuring maritime safety and security by establishing coastal surveillance radars and partnering on White Shipping agreements.
  • In responding to extreme situations through deployment of naval forces, though capacity-building of other Indian Ocean Navies and coast guards.
  • By ensuring trusted and secure communication in a digital era. 
  • Supporting institution building in the region, be it IORA, BIMSTEC, IONS, CSC, IPOI or the Indian Ocean Conference itself.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with the Foreign Affairs Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Touhid Hossain on the sidelines of the conference on February 16, 2025. The two leaders discussed the bilateral issues of mutual interest and BIMSTEC. The meeting aimed at defusing tensions and addressing “challenges” between Delhi and Dhaka over attacks on minorities and the continued stay of Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, in India.

Dr. Jaishankar met with other counterparts including Nepal Foreign Minister Arzu Deuba Rana, Bhutan Foreign Minister D.N. Dhungyel, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the Foreign Ministers of Mauritius and Brunei, as well as his Omani co-host Syed Badr Hamad Al Busaidi. The meetings largely focused on bilateral relations, trade, investment, energy and security.
