FM Jaishankar Meets Wang Yi; Talks Focus on Border & Trade Ties

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Monday as part of his visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Council Meeting

During the meeting, both leaders reviewed the state of India-China bilateral relations, discussed the ongoing border situation, trade issues, people-to-people ties and broader regional and global developments.

Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border, calling it the "foundation for mutual trust and cooperation." He acknowledged progress made over the past nine months in resolving some areas of friction but highlighted the need for further steps, including de-escalation and restoration of normalcy in all remaining areas.

He also appreciated the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after five years and thanked the Chinese side for its support. The year 2025 marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and China, and both sides agreed to mark this milestone with meaningful exchanges.

On the economic front, Jaishankar raised concerns about restrictive trade practices and market access issues, urging China to work towards a fair and balanced trade environment. He underlined that improving people-to-people exchanges and business cooperation can contribute positively to the overall relationship.

Both ministers agreed that differences should not be allowed to become disputes, and that mutual respect and sensitivity must guide bilateral engagement. They discussed the need for regular high-level dialogue and strategic communication.

The two sides also exchanged views on key international and regional issues ahead of the SCO meeting, reaffirming the importance of multilateral cooperation and a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

Jaishankar described the talks as “frank, open, and forward-looking,” reflecting India’s desire for constructive engagement with China in an era of global change.
