Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first day in the Maldives brought positive developments as both countries took steps to rebuild their friendship. Relations between India and the Maldives had become tense over the past year, affecting tourism and cooperation. But with PM Modi’s visit, both sides have shown a strong desire to move forward together.
PM Modi arrived in Male on Friday and was warmly welcomed by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu at the airport. The two leaders held a full day of meetings and discussions. At the end of the day, they announced several important agreements that will benefit both nations.
One of the biggest announcements was India’s new line of credit of $565 million to support Maldives’ development and economic needs. In addition, India agreed to reduce the Maldives’ annual debt payment by 40%, giving relief to the island nation during its economic difficulties.
