India Eyes Expansion of Netra AEW&C Fleet

The Ministry of Defence is set to evaluate a proposal to acquire six Netra Mk-1A Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) systems for the Indian Air Force. The plan will be tabled before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The upgraded airframes will be sourced from Brazil’s Embraer, while integration and system enhancements will be handled by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) under DRDO.

If cleared, this move will triple India’s AEW&C fleet, addressing key gaps in long-range aerial surveillance and command capabilities.AWACS platforms, like the Netra Mk-1A, are vital for early detection of aerial threats, especially amid growing strategic concerns along the borders with China and Pakistan.

India currently operates the Israeli EL/M-2090 Phalcon and the earlier DRDO-developed Netra Mk-1 systems—both of which have proven effective in operations like the 2019 Balakot airstrike and Operation Sindoor (May 2025).The proposal is driven by recent strategic reviews.

Following Operation Sindoor, India’s military leadership agreed on the need to scale up capabilities rapidly, anticipating that Pakistan may enhance its arsenal with Chinese support. The Netra Mk-1A brings improved radar reach, better electronic warfare integration, and enhanced communication support—positioning the IAF for stronger theatre-wide situational awareness.
