Ivory Coast Requests Withdrawal of French Troops

On December 31, 2024, Ivory Coast announced that French troops would commence their withdrawal from the country in January 2025, ending a decades-long military presence. President Alassane Ouattara stated that the French-run military base in Port Bouét would be handed over to Ivorian forces.

This move aligns with a broader trend in West Africa, where nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal and Chad have recently sought to reduce military ties with France, their former colonial power. The downscaling of military ties comes as France has been making efforts to revive its waning political and military influence on the continent by devising a new strategy that would sharply reduce its permanent troop presence in Africa.

The withdrawal reflects a growing sentiment for sovereignty and the exploration of new international partnerships, including with countries like Russia, China and Turkey. Despite these changes, concerns persist about potential security vacuums and the rise of extremist activities in the region.
