On January 3, 2025, Japan confirmed plans to procure AIM-120C-8 and AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) from the U.S. to bolster its air defence capabilities. This acquisition aligns with Japan's efforts to counter growing aerial threats from China and Russia, which have stepped up patrols near Japan.
This will strengthen its deterrence measures in light of escalating tensions in East Asia. The missiles will be integrated into Japan’s defence systems, including F-35 fighter jets. This plan will improve Japan’s capability to meet current and future threats by defending its homeland and U.S. personnel stationed there.
Japan’s robust defensive capability is crucial for maintaining regional stability and economic progress in response to China's growing military presence and provocations around Taiwan and the East China Sea. The procurement of AMRAAM will also include an array of training equipment, auxiliary parts, classified software, testing, programming and logistical support.
