Official Visit of S.Jaishankar to UK

British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy welcomed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar as his first official guest at Chevening House on 5th March, 2025. The two leaders engaged in wide-ranging discussions on the bilateral relationship and current geopolitical flashpoints.

The talks focussed on strategic coordination, political cooperation, trade deal negotiation, education, technology, mobility and people-to-people exchanges. The two foreign ministers agreed to formulate the next steps to strengthen cooperation in these areas. Since the U.S. has declared a change in its Russia-Ukraine policy, the U.K., along with France, has been at the forefront of the emerging European strategy towards the war and a potential peace deal. S. Jaishankar said “We exchanged views on regional and global issues including the Ukraine conflict, West Asia, Bangladesh and the Commonwealth. In an uncertain and volatile world, India-UK ties contribute to stability and prosperity.”The Labour Party of Keir Starmer has been keen to reset its ties with India and British Indians. The Government of India and the British government have sought to reset their ties as well, a process that appeared to have begun during the latter part of the 2010-24 period, when the Conservatives were in power in Westminster.

Jaishankar said “I think we see a President and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multi-polarity. And that is something which suits India.” He said “The U.S. had been thought of as a bloc with the West since 1945, rather than as a nation, but now the U.S.’s own self-perception is more as a nation. I think, from President Trump’s perspective, the one big shared enterprise that we have is the QUAD [Quadrilateral Security Dialogue].”

The Minister said “Each QUAD member was paying its fair share and so there were no spats about burden-sharing. Financial burden-sharing has become a central issue between theU.S. and several European countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) military alliance.

S. Jaishankar said “Mr. Trump appears open to connectivity initiatives of a certain collaborative nature”, referring to the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC), which finds mention in the India-U.S. joint statement that emerged from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent discussions with Mr. Trump at the White House. The statement also refers to other current and future connectivity initiatives, such as the newly announced Indian Ocean Strategic Venture.
