Quad FMs Unite Against Terrorism, Back Indo-Pacific

The Foreign Ministers of India, the United States, Japan, and Australia met in Washington and issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation among the Quad nations amid growing regional and global challenges. The leaders emphasized their shared values of democracy, rule of law, and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. They highlighted the need to oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force, especially in maritime regions.

Concerns Over South China Sea and East China Sea

The joint statement announced a new and ambitious strategic framework. It outlined four priority areas for cooperation: maritime and transnational security, economic prosperity and security, critical and emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response. The Quad ministers expressed deep concern over rising tensions in the South China Sea and East China Sea. They opposed the militarization of disputed features and condemned actions such as the use of water cannons, ramming of vessels, and interference in offshore resource development. They stressed the importance of freedom of navigation and adherence to international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Securing Critical Minerals and Supply Chains

On economic security, the ministers raised alarms about overdependence on one country for critical minerals and supply chains. They launched the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative to diversify sources and secure global supply. The aim is to reduce the risk of economic coercion and supply disruptions.

Addressing Regional Threats: North Korea and Myanmar

North Korea’s continued missile tests and nuclear activities also came under strong criticism. The Quad nations urged Pyongyang to follow United Nations Security Council resolutions. They condemned North Korea’s cyberattacks and the use of illicit funds for its weapons program. The ongoing crisis in Myanmar was another point of concern. The ministers called for an immediate ceasefire and urged all sides to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid. They supported ASEAN’s efforts and pushed for the full implementation of the Five Point Consensus.

Strong Stand on Terrorism

In a strong message on terrorism, the Quad condemned all forms of terror, including cross-border attacks. They referred to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 25 Indians and one Nepali. The ministers called for quick action against those responsible and urged global cooperation to bring them to justice.

Next Quad Meetings Announced

The statement also announced several practical steps. These include a field training exercise under the Indo-Pacific Logistics Network, the launch of the Quad Ports of the Future Partnership in Mumbai, and a contribution of $30 million in aid to help victims of the Myanmar earthquake in March. The ministers agreed to counter disinformation campaigns and any attempts to undermine Quad activities in the region. The meeting concluded with a strong message of unity. The ministers promised to continue deepening their cooperation and announced that the next Quad Leaders’ Summit will be hosted by India later this year. Australia will host the next Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in 2026.
