Temporary Suspension of Civil Flights at 32 Airports Across Northern and Western India Until May 15

In a major operational move, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the suspension of all civil flight operations at 32 airports across northern and western India from 9th to 14th May 2025, with airspace restrictions extending until 0529 IST on 15th May.

New Delhi, 10 May 2025: The Airports Authority of India (AAI), in coordination with national aviation authorities, has issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) suspending civil flight operations at 32 airports across northern and western India due to "operational reasons." This unprecedented closure began on 9th May 2025 and will continue until 0529 IST on 15th May 2025, affecting both domestic and regional flight schedules. The suspension includes civil flight activities at key airports such as Amritsar, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, Jodhpur, Bhuj, Rajkot, and Ambala, among others.List of Affected AirportsAdhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, and Uttarlai. In parallel, 25 Air Traffic Service (ATS) route segments within the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions (FIRs) have also been temporarily suspended. These routes will remain closed from ground level to unlimited altitude until 2359 UTC on 14th May 2025 (or 0529 IST on 15th May 2025) as per the latest NOTAM G0555/25, which replaces the earlier notification G0525/25.Impact on Airlines and PassengersAirlines have been advised to revise their flight plans and follow alternate routing advisories. While passenger services at major commercial hubs like Delhi and Mumbai remain operational, flights scheduled through or near the affected zones may experience delays, diversions, or cancellations.ATC (Air Traffic Control) units across the affected regions are working closely to coordinate rerouted flights and ensure safety in airspace management during the closure window. Passengers are urged to check flight status with their respective airlines before travel.Possible Operational Reasoning (Unofficial)Though the official statement cites "operational reasons," the simultaneous suspension of civilian access to numerous dual-use (civil-military) airfields and specific airspace corridors has sparked speculation about potential military exercises or security readiness drills in the backdrop of recent regional developments.
