The Russia–Ukraine War Is Still Going On Despite Talks

Despite ongoing negotiations and regular prisoner exchanges, the war between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of ending. On 8 June, Ukraine reported the largest overnight drone assault of the war—479 drones and 20 missiles launched by Russia, with most targeting central and western regions.

Ukraine claimed it intercepted 277 drones and 19 missiles, with minimal damage reported.

President Zelenskyy described conditions on parts of the frontline as “very difficult” and repeated Ukraine’s urgent need for stronger air defences. While this is going on, the fact that Ukraine doesn't know if it will get more military aid from the West, especially the US, makes things even harder for its already overworked forces. The aerial bombardment comes after Ukraine’s 1 June drone strike on Russian airfields, which reportedly damaged fighter jets deep within Russian territory. Russia has responded with a series of retaliatory drone attacks, including one on a Ukrainian base in Rivne.Although peace talks in Istanbul have led to prisoner swaps, no meaningful progress has been made toward a ceasefire. More exchanges of wounded and young soldiers were confirmed this week by Zelenskyy and Russian officials. Despite these humanitarian gestures, the war continues rages on—with diplomacy and violence now unfolding side by side.
