In the harsh and icy terrain of Ladakh, when Indian troops were vastly outnumbered, Major Thapa led his battalion with unflinching resolve against the onslaught of Chinese forces. On October 20, 1962, at the Srijap Post, Major Thapa and his small contingent of soldiers stood their ground against hundreds of enemy troops. Despite the overwhelming odds, he kept his soldiers’ morale high and inflicted significant casualties on the enemy.
Even as the post was overrun and captured, Major Thapa did not surrender. He fought till the last moment, eventually being taken prisoner by Chinese forces. He endured captivity and was released after the cessation of hostilities. For his unmatched bravery, leadership, and sacrifice, Major Thapa was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration for valor.
