U.S. Navy Revises Cruiser Modernisation Plan

On January 3, 2025, the U.S. Navy announced modifications to its cruiser ship modernisation strategy, aiming to extend the operational lifespan of its fleet. The revised plan addresses logistical challenges and ensures enhanced readiness. This move aligns with the U.S. commitment to maintaining a robust naval presence globally.

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) stated in the report “The cruiser modernisation effort's oversight and management are unique compared to how the navy typically oversees other surface ship maintenance and modernisation.” Through the cruiser modernisation effort, the Navy plans to use a phased approach to modernization that would extend 11 cruisers' service life by 5 years and upgrade the vessels' combat capability while also providing the ships with warfighting upgrades.
